New Look To Fridays In Sowerby Bridge
Fridays are set to take on a whole new look at St Paul’s Methodist Church, Sowerby Bridge. A new community group for people aged over 50 – The Sowerby Bridge Neighbourhood Team – will meet every week at the Church, starting on January 15th.
16 people, met recently to set up the group… but before that they did that, they enjoyed an hour of Tai Chi exercise.
Each meeting will initially include an hour’s exercise led by the NHS Health Improvement Team, followed by an assortment of taster activities such as creative writing, painting, arts and crafts.
“The aim is to keep people actively involved in life in their community to help improve and maintain their health and wellbeing,” says Paul Mansley of Calderdale Council’s Neighbourhood Schemes Team.
“How this happens is entirely down to the members of the group but with greater numbers involved, more varied and exciting activities can be supported.”
Neighbourhood Schemes are community groups for people aged over 50, supported by Calderdale Council. Their aim is to improve health and wellbeing.
Pilot schemes in central Halifax and Todmorden now have a total of over 200 members and function as independent groups under the names of In Touch and Oak respectively. New Neighbourhood Schemes are currently being developed in Elland, Sowerby Bridge and Pellon.
