Calderdale Sport Relief Miles Event March 2010

Go the extra mile for charity next month at Spring Hall athletics track in Halifax. Calderdale will be hosting one of Sainsbury’s Sport Relief Miles on Sunday 21 March. Everyone from tiny tots with mum and dad to super sprinters are invited to come and help raise money for Sport Relief.

The Calderdale Mile will take place at Spring Hall Athletics Track, Halifax, from 9am to 3pm. Participants can choose to complete one, three or even six miles.

For more information about taking part, visit sportrelief.com or contact Mike Murray on mike.murray@calderdale.gov.uk or 01422 284413.

The funds raised will go towards helping disadvantaged people both in the UK and across the world’s poorest countries. This year there are three main areas being highlighted: children living on the streets and working in dangerous conditions, people affected by malaria and local UK projects.

In the past Sport Relief has seen famous names complete gruelling challenges to raise both awareness and money for the cause. In 2006 David Walliams swam the English Channel, last summer Eddie Izzard completed a staggering 43 marathons in just 51 days and more celebrities will be putting their nerve to the test in 2010.

Hundreds of thousands of people across the country are expected to take part in the Sainsbury’s Sport Relief Miles, which will be a fitting finale to a weekend packed full of entertainment, energy and events on BBC One.

Councillor Ian Cooper, the Council’s Cabinet Member for Safer and Stronger Communities, said: “Once again, Halifax will be part of this exciting event which has proven hugely popular in the past. It is a fantastic opportunity to get exercising together as a family, have fun and support a worthy cause.”
